Periodontology
Periodontology
The main objective of Clinical Periodontology is to restore the patient’s periodontal health, that is, the health of the tissues that support the teeth (gums, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and root cement) and surround dental implants (gums and peri-implant bone).
When these supporting tissues are affected, for various reasons (infection, trauma, or by individual susceptibility combined with other systemic diseases such as diabetes), the teeth may be compromised, and may become mobile and, in some cases, fall out.
Periodontitis
In case ofPeriodontitis, it is not possible to replace the bone that has already been lost, so the goal is to stop the progression of the disease by eliminating the infection. Plaque and tartar deposits are removed from the periodontal pockets. In more complex cases, it is necessary to resort to Periodontal Surgery, during which the roots are exposed in order to clean them properly.
Gingivitis
In case ofgengivitis, the treatment involves removing all the bacterial plaque and tartar build-up, thus eliminating bad tastes and odors. During the treatment the patient is instructed about the procedures for a correct oral care.
Once the treatment is completed, the patient must comply with the maintenance program.

Symptoms
Most periodontal diseases are silent, that is, they show no symptoms or signs except when they are already in an advanced stage and there is tooth mobility, however, in cases of acute gum infections, there may be severe or moderate pain, especially when chewing or touching.
A thorough clinical examination, complemented by detailed radiographic images, even in routine consultations, is very important for the detection of any type of periodontal problem, since it has been proven that patients with periodontal disease have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular and renal problems, and when they are diabetics, periodontal inflammation makes it difficult to control diabetes.
The clinical and radiological means of periodontal study allow the periodontal or peri-implant diagnosis to be established, and periodontal diseases can be defined as gingivitis and periodontitis, and peri-implant diseases as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis.
