Endodontics and devitalization

Endodontics

A specialty dedicated to tooth preservation and the study and treatment of the pathology of the dental pulp.

More than aesthetics, it is tooth pain and tooth sensitivity that bring the patient to this specialty.

Causes

Each tooth has a system of blood vessels and nerves, known as the dental pulp, which is located inside the tooth and extends to each of the roots through the root canals.

If the dental pulp is infected by bacteria (due to extensive decay, dental trauma, or gum disease, etc.), the tissues in the pulp become inflamed or vital. This usually triggers pain spontaneously or after thermal stimuli (cold and hot), which means that the pulp is in necrosis, i.e. “dying”.

In some cases an abscess forms that tends to invade neighboring tissues, causing swelling and more pain.

Treatment

Remove the dental pulp, eliminate bacteria, and disinfect the canals – these will be properly filled with a biocompatible material so that no new infection can occur.

This procedure is known as devitalization, and at beclinique, it can be done in one, two, or three consultations; each case is unique.

In the end, the tooth is usually restored with a temporary material until the definitive rehabilitation is carried out, as soon as possible, to avoid contamination and/or fracture of the tooth.

A devitalized tooth can last a lifetime, provided it is properly rehabilitated and cared for on a daily basis.

Mechanical devitalization

beclinique provides mechanized devitalization. This allows for greater agility and a decrease in the number of consultations. Mechanized endodontic treatment has 3 major advantages:

  1. Speed of treatment;
  2. More comfort for the patient;
  3. Better disinfection of the canals, leading to a better prognosis and treatment success.
